“WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THESE DIGITAL DOWNLOADS YOU HAVE FOR SALE?”:
Good news! Every single thing you order now immediately comes with a zip of the mp3s in 320kbps (except for certain pre-orders!) . So you can rock the album on an Ipod whilst you wait for mister postman. Or you can just buy the downloads for a wee bit cheaper. They come with artwork and whatever other goodies we have in jpg or pdf form. Check your junk mail before emailing me please! It's an automated process and will be nearly instantaneously sent your way. The exception to this instant mp3 deal is anything we didn't release on cd as well (see: Appleseed Cast, Art in Manila, and more). We don't own the digital rights and therefore cannot deal with them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS WHOLE FREDDY POINT SYSTEM TO ME":
Alright, here's the deal. For every Graveface Records release you buy off of graveface.com, you receive one Freddy Point which resides in the catalogue you will receive. Basically you collect several of these to obtain goodies. Those goodies and rules are somewhat explained in the catalogue. I suppose the only thing that's not explained is regarding the test pressing thang. You must have your Points turned in before production begins. We started doing the Freddy Point thing back in Oct 08. The Dreamend and Hospital Ships releases were the first to have them. Here comes the confusing part. YOU MAY RECEIVE A FREDDY POINT IN SOMETHING YOU DO NOT BUY OFF GRAVEFACE.COM. I've been trying to include them in the distributed titles to the best of my abilities. The only way you are guaranteed one though is off this site. You also do not get them with digital orders. The whole point originally was to get people excited about a physical copy again. I think that sums up the bulk of questions I get regarding them. Thanks for being so excited!

hsGRAVE051: DREAMEND : 'So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite' CD / Animated Picture Disc / Digital Download (released on August 10th, 2010)

Following The Seven Fields of Aphelion's Periphery (Feb '10/Graveface) and Tobacco's Maniac Meat (May '10/Anticon), Dreamend's album, So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite is the latest album from a member of the peculiar electronic band, Black Moth Super Rainbow. With So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite and its companion piece (which is set to come out in 2011), Dreamend diverges from the synth-pop of Black Moth to take on a nightmarish folk sound that evokes the faded scenery of ghost towns and eerie midnight drives.

As Dreamend's sole member and proprietor behind Graveface Records, an independent label with a sharp focus on hand assembled items and limited editions, Ryan Graveface has a dazzlingly complex album in SIAMByB. Heavy on banjo, bells, guitar, organ and fearlessly honest vocals, this record is relentlessly catchy.

"Pink Cloud in the Woods," sets the tone for the album with its deceptively patient ruminations. Sparse cricket sounds, bells and piano evolve into stop-and-go drums and the breathy chant of "I walked through the woods. It was a rainy day." From there, SIAMBbB sprawls out like a cinematic experience more than a loose collection of songs. The tale concerns a character who acts on his destructive fantasies and impulses. A synapse in his head snaps like a twig and before he knows it, he's in the middle of a deed he'd never have imagined undertaking just days before.

The banjo-laden song "Pieces" delves deep into the details of the crime with intrepidly gruesome lyrics. Its misleadingly upbeat energy by way of intricate drumming causes this song about brutal murder to be unusually catchy. Album closer "An Admission" shifts down the synth highway as it details the character's seemingly inexplicable need to kill again and again. It starts with pitch bending swirls buttressed by banjo and drums. Soon, these elements are overtaken by stormy effects and soprano "whoo-ooo"s, culminating in an about-face of percussive THRASH.

The tale of SIAMBbB will have you reeling and so will its incredible packaging. The label who brought you indie-rock's first bonafide, hand made pop-up book with Long-Forgotten Friend have upped the ante: the LP version of So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite, is presented like a phenakistoscope, a classic Victorian animation machine. If you thought picture discs and colored vinyl were cool (both mediums you Graveface aficionados will know a lot about), wait until you get a load of William Schaff's painstaking, brilliantly delivered design. It's truly a remarkable accomplishment in the annals of the Album as Artform, which is a hallmark of Graveface Records.

***************NEW RELEASE***************

hsGRAVE053:Hospital Ships :Carry On b/w Bird in Furs 7 inch / Digital Download (released on July 20th, 10)

Jordan Geiger’s Hospital Ships project returns with the first collection of new material since the demise of the relatively unknown but critically enjoyed Minus Story. 2008’s Oh Ramona (a collection of home recordings) was a beautiful introduction to the work, but the new songs Geiger has recorded (mostly with John Congleton) are taking things to the next level. “Carry On” b/w “Bird In Furs” are the first singles from this upcoming full-length, lovingly titled Lonely Twin.

Geiger stays busy recording and touring with Shearwater, and is a veteran of beloved midwest bands Appleseed Cast and Old Canes, but his heart lies with Hospital Ships. We’re lucky for that, as Lonely Twin offers some of the most beautiful and satisfying work he’s ever done. There are fifteen songs total, and though they were originally conceived as a collection of singles, Geiger is still deciding which songs will make it onto the proper full length, if it’s ever released. All this makes the 7” with “Bird In Furs” and “Carry On” that much more important ... it might be the only way to have the songs.

“Bird In Furs” is a sort of throwback piece, honoring the tradition of dual mono mixing. Though it’s just layers of Geiger and a cellist performing, there’s a fullness to the recording, partnered with the vulnerable sense of longing the lyrics provide. The modern listener will undoubtedly be reminded of 'There’s Nothing Wrong With Love' era Built to Spill, but repeated listens will offer bits of Nico and Nick Drake. The result is a sort of ‘60s folk song wrapped in modern lo-fi insecurities. “Carry On” began as an attempt at a country song, an ode to all the women that have passed through a life, all the friends that have been around at the end of the night, and all the moments we miss out on, sleeping through the world’s rebirth each night. It’s a love letter to regret, joy and the hope of meaningful connections. Geiger’s gift, lyrically, is the ability to deliver gut-punch insight with the simplest and most unassuming words.
“Carry On” is perhaps the greatest example of this gift, and in three short minutes, the listener is capable of having a completely different perspective on love, loss and their place in the universe.

All the songs on Lonely Twin were recorded in a remote Brooklyn cabin with limited access to American Apparel, mostly with John Congleton. Everything was mixed by John Congleton (Grammy nominated producer who has worked with St. Vincent, Thermals, Roots, Bill Callahan and others).

GRAVE042:The Lava Children : self-titled CD/LP/Digital Download (released on May 26th, 09) LP pressing is 500 copies and comes on hazy green/pink wax / LP COMES WITH DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD

With The Lava Children’s self-titled debut, the listener is immediately aware they’re hearing something completely uncommon. In fact, The Lava Children are something completely uncommon.

As the music industry becomes ever more jaded and manufactured and music is treated like so much invaluable garbage to be traded and tossed about freely, it seems like hearing something that sounds totally new is becoming less and less of a regular occurrence.

Here you’ll find no familiar “classic rock overtones.” There are no hackneyed “angular guitar tones”- in fact, you’re only occasionally reminded that you’re even hearing instruments. From the dreamy, weirdly programmed Colecovision-on-the-fritz nonsense of opening track, “I Am a Pony,” to the underwater opium cabaret wash of “Particles,” to the discordant, drunk music box stagger of “Troll,” every track on this mini-lp bears the same distinctive stamp of not sounding a whole lot like anything else you’ve heard.

This music may have been found inside a rotting old fish, plucked from a muddy, overgrown swamp and encrusted with plankton and river rot. It could have been stuck in an ice block in the far-flung pitch-black night of the frozen tundra or growing out of a patch of moss and fungus on the side of a mighty California redwood tree. It could’ve been found buried in an Egyptian desert wasteland, firmly clutched to the now-hollow chest of some bygone dusty old corpse… and it just might be cursed. Hell- maybe it’s from space, or some kind of message from the future.

But fact of the matter is it’s made by a couple of Oklahomans who are soon to be Texans...Though that doesn’t make it any less of a fascinating listen.

Close your eyes, turn off all the lights, and turn this album up. See if the little hairs on the back of your neck aren’t immediately standing at full attention as you find yourself awash in weird, half-remembered memories of playing with a dog you had when you were five years old, deep in the swiftly darkening woods and far from home.

GRAVE041:The Appleseed Cast : Sagarmatha Double LP (released on Feb 24th, 09)

Sagarmatha, the seventh full length by Appleseed Cast, finds the band self-assured and largely home-recorded, indulging in the creation of their art beyond the pressures of hype or doubt that compromise younger and lesser bands. It seems that they understand that for a band that's been making music for ten years to sound fresh, their ideas must be fresh. Sagarmatha integrates the more anthemic sensibilities of Two Conversations (mainly in the very catchy vocal melodies) and the density and distorted rock moments of Peregrine with the experimental tendencies of both Low Level Owl records. While LLO alternated noise and song over two records, pushing and pulling the listener in and out of the din and the narrative, Sagarmatha is a world where the melodic vocals and knotty delayed guitars Appleseed Cast is known for are supported by (and can't exist without) the ambient noise, electronic beats, bells, percussion, and keyboards the band has grown to love. They've been pegged with various genre names over the years, most of which they've outgrown and outlived. At this point, I think they are best described as weavers: of sounds beautiful and horrible, always intriguing, and of stories in sometimes inscrutable but always evocative lyrics. Their songs draw you in immediately, but demand multiple listens, which is how it should be I think, and is why they've inspired such a loving and long-lasting following. They've weathered many storms of fashion. Sagarmatha is mountain-climbing music, Appleseed Cast are mountain-climbers. Sagarmatha is epic in scope and sound, evoking the horror and beauty of nature, the sublime. A band bred by the ocean and born in Kansas is unafraid to stare into the void of sea or sky. As points of reference, I suggest this record fits somewhere between the intersection of Low and the Flaming Lips, Can and the Postal Service, or Fugazi and Sigur Ros.

First pressing (1000 copies) came colored Maroon with purple splatter. The 2xlp has one bonus track not found on the cd version. COLORED VINYL SOLD OUT! Current/second pressing is black.

Jordan Geiger, songwriter of Minus Story, trumpet player for Shearwater and resident of Lawrence, Kansas, brings you his bedroom-pop solo album, Oh, Ramona. Influenced by the sounds of The Flaming Lips song from which the name Hospital Ships is drawn, Geiger's debut exudes a seasoning of classic influences including John Lennon, The Zombies, and ELO to produce a bedroom pop symphony. Exploring relationships both failed and ongoing with friends, lovers, and pets, Geiger delicately teases the listener with his boyish tenor of a voice. In the background, muted horns swell, pianos twinkle, and percussion marches in step. Mixed mostly by John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Modest Mouse,The Mountain Goats, The Polyphonic Spree), Oh, Ramona is the culmination of over two and half years of writing and recording. Highlights include the upbeat opener "Bitter Radio Single," the symphonic majesty of "I Want It To Get Out," the tender "Girls," and the truly pet sounds-influenced title track. This record comes packaged in an 18pt chipboard gatefold sleeve and is lovingly hand assembled by your friends at Graveface Records.

z GRAVE038:Kid Dakota : A Winner's Shadow CD / LP / Digital Download (released on March 25th, 08) 250 lps on white, 250 black.

"Nearly four years after the relentlessly grim The West Is the Future, Darren Jackson returns to his solo identity as Kid Dakota, having spent the intervening years as both a producer/engineer with his own studio, and as co-frontman of the considerably poppier Minneapolis indie act the Olympic Hopefuls alongside Erik Appelwick of Tapes 'n Tapes and Vicious Vicious. (Following Appelwick's recent departure, the band has since shortened its name to the Hopefuls.) No one could possibly mistake A Winners Shadow for an ABBA record -- "Transfusion," a catchy song about heroin addiction and psychic oblivion in Mexico, and the dealer-and-addict saga "Puffy Jackets" are two of the sunnier tunes to be found here -- but it at least acknowledges the possibility of happiness in songs like the nearly hopeful, energetic "Chutes and Ladders." And at least "Long Odds" is about a wild-eyed gambling addict instead of a drug addict, so that's mildly less depressing and squalid. The new, stripped-down lineup of drummer Ian Prince, with Jackson handling everything else, gives the album a stark, bare-bones intimacy that's heightened by Jackson's clean, sparse production. That makes a refreshing change from the hazy slowcore vibe of Kid Dakota's first two albums released on Low's Chairkickers Union label. Along with the incrementally sunnier lyrical outlook, the crystalline, nearly live sound of tracks as varied as the aggressive, surging opener "New York System" and the close-miked, stripped-down intimacy of the slow-building "Downhill" marks a new and welcome progression in Kid Dakota's career." ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

z GRAVE034:Art in Manila : Set the Woods on Fire LP (released on Aug 21st, 07) Pressed on blue marble and translucent blue vinyl hybrid. limited one time pressing of 500.

After Azure Ray disbanded in 2004, Orenda Fink (one half of the duo) crafted her debut as a solo artist: the acclaimed "The Invisible Ones," (Saddle Creek) inspired by the mythologies of the South and her experiences with Vodou in Haiti. Through the "Invisible Ones" touring cycle, she assembled several different touring bands, along the way making profound musical and personal friendships with her band mates. One such relationship was with Adrianne Verhoeven (The Anniversary.) After several solo tours with Adrianne in her band, and with a little astrological nudge, Orenda decided to form a new band using the cream of the crop of her touring crew. The band she formed, Art in Manila, is comprised of Orenda (guitar, vocals), Adrianne (keys, vocals), Dan McCarthy (McCarthy Trenching, Mayday, Bright Eyes), also on keys, Steve Bartolomei (Mal Madrigal) on guitar, Ryan Fox (The Good Life) on bass, and Corey Broman (Dance Me Pregnant) on drums. 'Set The Woods On Fire' is the band's debut album, recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, by Joel Petersen (The Faint, Broken Spindles)

z GRAVE033:Laura Gibson : If you come to Greet Me 180 gram LP (released on Aug 21st, 07) limited one time pressing of 500

Daughter of the town kindergarten teacher and a forest ranger, Laura Gibson's root runs deep in the small coastal town of Coquille, Oregon. An outsider to the burgeoning Portland music scene, Gibson's early choice of venues (an AIDS hospice here, a kindergarten class there) and her complete lack of music scene knowledge may have confused erstwhile veterans, but her homespun sincerity, enchanting voice, and mature songwriting won `em all over in a heartbeat. Listening to If You Come to Greet Me, it's immediately apparent something magical happened at Portland's Typefoundry Studios in Summer 2006 with the capable assistance of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western). The release is haunting, perfectly bolstered by gorgeous, orchestral arrangements that never detract from the melodic backbone of Gibson's songwriting. By the end of the sessions, almost all the members of Norfolk & Western had enthusiastically contributed performances. Wayne Miller filled out the troupe with tasteful, loping upright bass lines and Alex James (Delorean) stopped in to sing a few bars. If You Come to Greet Me demonstrates a rich tapestry of emotion over nine songs--hope, ennui, reflection, inspiration, loneliness, happiness, yearning--all stitched together with a steady songwriting hand, where imagery dovetails with melody in an irresistible way.

z GRAVE030:Black Moth Super Rainbow : Dandelion Gum Double LP / CD / Digital Download (released on May 22nd, 07) LP version has bonus song not on CD

Deep in the backwoods of Pennsylvania lives a five piece psyche-rock group called Black Moth Super Rainbow. It doesn't use 'high-tech' gadgets or computers. Members go by aliases like Tobacco (vocals) and Father Hummingbird (Rhodes and monosynth). Most folks refer to the band as being completely detached from the 'real world', while they're actually probably more connected to the 'real world' than anyone else. Its geographical and societal seclusion allows Black Moth to create pop songs uninfluenced by mainstream tunes. Songs are created with a fresh slate-- a complete naivity for 'what's hot' at the moment. Dandelion Gum completely affirms this notion by presenting a collection of fairy-tale psyche-pop that grabs listeners with obscure and unique hooks. Black Moth Super Rainbow gifts listeners with an equally addictive alternative to mainstream pop-- just as brilliant and much more creative.

3rd and current pressing is White vinyl with Dark Pink splatter. These are no longer scratch n sniff. Edition of 1000 copies.

z GRAVE029:Jakob : Solace CD / Double LP (released on June 5th, 07) LP limited to 500 copies; one red lp, one black lp. down to last few.

Third album from Napier, New Zealand's Jakob, follows the successful Cale:Drew and debut Subsets of Sets, and continues to infiltrate eardrums the world over with their expansive organic instrumentals. Solace ebbs and flows in a fluid motion as it takes hold of the listener, initially enticing you inside their ocean-sized compositions before dragging your ears through cascading Great Wall-sized slabs of sound. While Solace stays true to the band's roots, this ain't fodder for a cafe, instead showcasing the telepathic interplay of three musicians whose years of playing together are immediately obvious. Produced by New Zealand producer David Holmes and also features Tristan Dingemans from HDU on "Everything All Of The Time".

zz GRAVE028:Dreamend : The Long Forgotten Friend CD / Double LP / Digital Download (released on Oct 28th, 08)

Dreamend is the main musical output of Ryan Graveface, Graveface Records' owner/sole employee and part time guitarist for psychedelic oddballs Black Moth Super Rainbow. Since its’ inception in 2002, Graveface has released albums by Monster Movie (ex-Slowdive), The Loose Salute (Mojave 3 side project), Kid Dakota, Appleseed Cast, Art in Manila (ex-Azure Ray), Octopus Project, BMSR and many more.

The Long Forgotten Friend's 14 songs (10 songs on the cd version) are loosely based on stories and memories of a relative from the far past, whose tragic life has metamorphosed into legend over the course of time. This is music to listen to while driving through abandoned cities and ghost towns, imagining their disintegration. Rather than drums making the melody as on their previous efforts, banjo and vocals are at the foreground of the landscape. The drumming is minimalist, almost spastic and, as always, the guitars are the ghosts. Dreamend has taken a darker, folky, more nightmarish road than before. Some evidence of this can be found on the tracks Your Kiss, Scratch and Deathwatch Carnival 1965. Conversely, they have found themselves with more poppy, almost sing-alongs than ever before (see Are you Waking and The Tulip Staircase).

Appearances by Toto of the Octopus Project and Darren Jackson of Kid Dakota add some outside sounds, while Darren and John Congleton's (see Explosion in the Sky, Modest Mouse, etc) mixing bring them all together.

Listeners are encouraged to buy the vinyl version as it includes the cd version for free, contains 4 extra songs-16 minutes worth of music, a handmade pop-up gatefold by William Schaff (GYBE!, Okkervil River etc), and an extra cd of demos and alternate versions. The cd version comes packaged in a 15pt chipboard gatefold sleeve with a 12 page booklet of photos by Christy Romanick.

Colored vinyl limited to 150 copies available only on graveface.com. update: Colored version sold out!! A few hundred of the black version are still in print and now shipping.

z GRAVE027:The Appleseed Cast : Peregrine LP (released on April 18th, 06)

Peregrine is: spacious, thick, brooding, joyful, explosive, and back and forth, yet somehow seamless at the same time. Peregrine carries tones and sounds (at times) as stormy and spooky as the album's theme/storyline lends. All in 13 tracks, Peregrine significantly yields what the band's last four albums offered striking glimpses of. Overcoming a reflective hiatus to their career-defining, long-awaited return, The Appleseed Cast reemerge-- living out their Fight Songs and Mile Markers.

z GRAVE026:The Octopus Project & Black Moth Super Rainbow : The House of Apples and Eyeballs CD / LP SOLD OUT/ Digital Download (released on Oct 31st, 06)

"The House of Apples & Eyeballs" is not a split, but a year-long, full-length collaboration by both bands. The Octopus Project is known and loved for their uncategorizable broken-guitars-meet-samplers-meet-drums-meet-drum machines sound, while the musical island of Black Moth Super Rainbow would rather play their songs in the woods and not let you know if their gear is broken or working just fine. Holding hands from Austin to Pittsburgh, they set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the year. For anyone familiar with both bands, may you find yourself at peace with this dream record. But know that not all is as it seems, and the challenge of figuring out which band played which parts may sometimes be impossible. While a couple tracks did make it to the record in their original, one-band form, most were passed back and forth for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up beats and vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted riffs. A theremin orchestra descends into layered steel guitars before all is dissolved in a wash of hazy synths. The Octopus Project appears courtesy of Peek-A-Boo Records. They have wowed audiences in 2006 at Coachella, and were named one of Rolling Stone's breakout bands of SXSW. They will soon be going into the studio to record their very highly anticipated third album in 2007. Black Moth Super Rainbow lives on Graveface Records, and although known as somewhat of an enigma, has come out of the forest in 2006 to play at the request of bands like Of Montreal and The Black Angels. They have been recording their third full length album that will be released when the time is just right.

z GRAVE025:Daturah : Reverie CD / Double LP / Digital Download (released on April 15th, 08) LP VERSION SOLD OUT!

Take the vaporous fumes from the heavy lilting post rock from the likes of Isis, Pelican, and Explosions in the Sky, splash in a little bit of the eerie and goose bump inducing cinematic vibes of Entroducing era DJ Shadow, a chic albeit druggy post modern foray into the psyche ala the Blade Runner soundtrack and you’re still only touching the surface of Daturah’s creative impetus. Daturah cannot be merely explained or pigeonholed but instead, felt, by the listener. Hailing from Frankfurt, Germany, this instrumental combo stretch their riffs through audible taffy pulls and seep in crisp and thinly layered synths along with half buried samples to create a listening experience that jolts the senses. While staying true to the Krautrock glide of Can and Tangerine Dream, Reverie is intricately woven headphone music for those who like their loudness plunging to the depths of ocean trench droning while treading upon a moody middle ground of pure resonance and dulcet friction. They may rock their instrumental guile a bit heavy at times but it’s all weaved into a trance-inducing and ambient sojourn into a vivid panorama of love, fear and anger exhibiting how sometimes that music sans words can offer all the explaining there is to offer.

z GRAVE023:Experimental Aircraft : Third Transmission CD / Digital Download (released on Feb 26th, 08)

The cultural dialogue between England and America continues courtesy of Austin's dreamy Experimental Aircraft. With a sound as gauzy and narcotized as classic U.K. shoegazers Lush, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine, THIRD TRANSMISSION is both a blast from the past and a breath of fresh air. Singer Rachel Staggs drips just the right amount of honey in her Nyquil-sweet vocals, while dewy echoes of guitar and splashes of drum create an atmospheric glaze over the pop backbone of songs such as "Walk Away" and "It Won't Be Long." Experimental Aircraft are a rare, glistening oasis in the Texas heat.

z GRAVE022:Toman : Perhaps we should've Smoked the Salmon First CD / Digital Download (released on Oct 31st, 06)

One year after catching a grizzly bear, lesson one (2005, Zealrecords), Toman is back with their second full length, perhaps we should have smoked the salmon first . You can expect minutes of instrumental trips a la Mogwai, timid popsongs as patented by Pinback and postrock like the Album Leaf; however, their music sounds warmer and more beautiful than their idols. They describe their new album as repetition, sparse electronics, choirs, melancholy, warm guitars, and flemish blokes having fun. These guys have played the Belgian and Dutch indie clubs and some nice festivals (Dour, Motel Mozaique...) as well as supporting bands like Karate, Death Cab for Cutie, The Album Leaf, Logh, B Fleischmann, The New Year, 65daysofstatic, The Berg Sans Nipple and more.

z GRAVE021:Power Pill Fist : Kongmanivong CD / Digital Download (released on Feb 26th, 08)

When Ken Fec isn´t collaborating with his other outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow where he's helping to create some of the glossiest and narcotic induced drizzling sunshine pop kookiness, he´s serving as the brainchild of Power Pill Fist, an entity at the helm of some chunky ass, psychotropic, skewed bliss.

Rest assured Fec isn´t just some fly-by-night knob twiddler but instead a visionary with a true penchant for manipulating the Atari 2600 tossed into the mix with a mind-boggling night where Ennio Morricone, Kraftwerk, and Black Dice paint the town red. Still going strong as the resident DJ for Graveface Records where he puts on sets sans spinning the records between the live sets of the artists from the labels roster, Fec´s second release, Kongmanivong, under the Power Pill Fist moniker perches him atop the summit of modern day experimental music.

Kongmanivong is a hearty collage of hazy dub resonance and sticky funk with the abrasiveness of early industrial paladins such as Nitzer Ebb and Frontline Assembly. Even though the most seasoned of noise rock fans will dig it, Kongmanivong keeps the squalls of fuzz abundant but simmers them down into a disturbing procession of skronky techno and globs upon globs of post-modern meets neo-Krautrock all underlined with a seedy pop underbelly that is enigmatically and simultaneously jarring and soothing. Never have the terms bi-polar, haywire and ambient been able to be tossed around freely in a single summation of music as they are when mentioning Kongmanivong.

Fantastic lengthy instrumental epics that tell not just stories, but tomes. DATURAH is an instrumental five-piece from Frankfurt, Germany. This is their debut album, which consists of three incredibly HUGE tracks spanning the space of 40+ minutes. When they hit the crest of their swells, it knocks you flat on the floor and you won't be getting up anytime soon. Fans of Explosions in the Sky, Mono, Mogwai, et al will not be dissappointed. In fact, you may just throw some of those records away cos' they'll pale in comparison...

z GRAVE017:Hundred Hands : Her Accent was Excellent CD / Digital Download (released in Aug of 05)

Led by Aaron Pillar and Christopher Crisci (founding members of The Appleseed Cast), HUNDRED HANDS pilots the listener through a complex journey of exquisite musical landscapes, glimmering melodies and warm, pulsing, beautiful instrumentation. But this time it's Aaron who takes center stage on vocals. LITTLE EYES, Hundred Hands's first release, pulls at the right parts at all the right times - the texture, the feel, the sound of everything - creating a surrounding that is abundant in introspection and sonic inspiration. LITTLE EYES is flawlessly executed. With producer Ed Rose on drums / percussion, this trio of post-hardcore heroes can do no wrong. 2005 marks the long awaited return of the band. After 4 years of wait the new release (and very first full length) saw the light of the sun by Chicago label Graveface. "HER ACCENT WAS EXCELLENT" is filled with emo anthems, touching lyrics, dreamy melodies and some instrumental jewels. Legends never die.

z GRAVE015:Power Pill Fist : Extra Life CD / Digital Download (released in April of 05)

Feel the retro Atari 2600 goodness that is Power Pill Fist! Essentially, the sounds of Power Pill Fist are almost exclusively made with an Atari 2600. I think this guy adds some guitar or synth. Maybe.

I'd call the PPF sound: listenable noise. Unlike a lot of power electronics/noise I don't have to be really angry to listen to this disc. Listening to PPF brings back all sorts of bizarre memories of how my Atari 2600 started acting bizarre after I accidentally spilled an entire can of Aldi's Cream Soda into it. None of the games would play, but, man, would that thing pump out some crazy sounds.

So, if you're like me, and you remember the aldi cream soda pop + Atari 2600 disaster of your youth with fondness, you owe it to yourself to check out this sound.

z GRAVE012 : Monster Movie : Transistor CDEP / Digital Download (released in Dec of 04)

Two facts inevitably come up when introducing any new release by Monster Movie. The first being the genealogy of their band name, most likely a reference to the title of the debut album by the then Malcolm Mooney fronted incarnation of krautrock mega-legends, Can. The second fact, slightly more relevant to discussing the bands work, is that Monster Movie features Christian Savill, former member of shoegazing pioneers Slowdive. While other Slowdive ex-members Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell have continued to put out material on mega-indie 4AD for the last few years, both in the form of twangy mope-rock outfit Mojave 3 and as solo artists, Savill's half-decade long collaboration with songwriting partner Sean Hewell has remained a slightly more obscured gem of the indie-underground. Transistor is perhaps another step away from what could only be the mixed blessing-curse of being constantly associated with a ground-breaking act like Slowdive.

z GRAVE011: Spires that in the Sunset Rise : s/t CD / Digital Download (released in Dec of 04)

Spires That in the Sunset Rise is the musical collaboration of Kathleen Baird, Taralie Peterson, Tracy Peterson, and Georgia Vallas. Steeped in primal experimentalism and world eclecticism, the music is a repellant and magnetizing swarm of harps, guitars, cello, drums, harmonium, banjo, mbira, spike fiddle, bells, and vocals.
Now based in Chicago, Illinois, the four musicians have been playing music in different formations for over 10 years. Through these relationships, the music has evolved into a synthesis of various influence, with an arduous search of the unexamined (albeit darker sides) of folk music.

z GRAVE010 : Dreamend : as if by ghosts... CD / Digital Download (released in Aug of 04) limited to 3000 copies; each copy has it's own unique B&W photo as a cover

From its distinctly somber opening, "as if by ghosts" haunt the listener with echoes of time lost. Its 10 tracks effectively create the sunshine-through-a-million-clouds atmosphere that the trio has honed over their 4 year existence. Like an epic journey through a sleeping graveyard, "as if by ghosts" is a grey, but pastoral scene. Drums are the melody, guitars are the ghosts, and imagery is the feeing that drives dreamend's newest. The forty five minute trip flows with the grace of a 23 year-old growing a sepiatone beard. The magic of this collection of songs lies in the weathering of what was. To conjure the spirits of discarded memories, each arbum is packaged with an authentic, completely unique photograph from the early 1900s, squared off by a simpistic, lunch-bag frame. The selfdom of each exclusive cover, paired with the apathetic stills of moth-eaten American life, best suits the albums integrity. "as if by ghosts" feels like a beautifuly focused record on such seemingly unfocused themes as those. Ryan says he's 23, but i know he's either 25 or 22. -tom (black moth super rainbow)
